1 〔推定を表して〕

●あわてて出かけたらしく, ドアが開けっぱなしだった. Apparently they hurried out; the door was left open.

・客が来ているらしく, 居間のほうから話し声が聞こえてきた. I heard several people talking in the living room. I thought they had guests with them.

・彼は何も知らないらしく, 楽しそうに笑っていた. He was laughing happily, as if he didn't know anything about it.

2 〔…に似つかわしく〕

●常識人らしくふるまう behave like a person with common sense.

●それじゃ日本語らしく聞こえない. That does not sound like Japanese.

・もうちょっと女らしく化粧の一つもしたらどうだ. Why don't you put on makeup to [and] make yourself look more feminine?

・男なら男らしく言い訳なんかよしなさい. Be a man and stop making excuses!

・学生なら学生らしくしなさい. If you are a student, behave like one [as such].

・仕事が忙しすぎる. 人間らしく生きたい. I've got too much work to do, I want to lead a more normal human life.
